The first book of the series contains basic principles and theoretical concepts of cognitive empowerment; it presents a practical approach and examples of methodologies on augmentative and alternative communication for not speaking disabled children with Rett Syndrome.

Rosa Angela Fabio PhD is professor of General Psychology at the faculty of Psychology, university of Messina. She is coordinator at the faculty of Psychological Science and Technique of the University of Messina.
Prior to her current position, Rosa Angela Fabio PhD was professor of General Psychology at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Milano, 2005-2008. She mainly works in the area of automatic and controlled processes of attention. She is doing research on various aspects of cognition with specific focus on empowerment of logic, attention and working memory processes.

A test for evaluation of autistic symptoms in children is presented and analyzed. The test – in English and in Arabic – is a diagnostic tool and can be used by teachers and supervisors, appropriately trained. Moreover the test provides references to evaluate the severity of autism. 

Sami Basha, PhD. is a Professor of Pedagogy and special education at Birzeit University and Hebron University in Palestine. He is also a pedagogical consultant on local and international institutions. His main research interests include: intercultural studies and minorities, special and inclusive education. Dr. Basha was born in the town of Jenin, Palestine, and completed his master's and doctoral degrees in the faculty of Sciences of Education at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, Italy. He is a member of the professional Board for Clinical Pedagogy in Italy. He is also a project director of a grant addressing special needs education with the AMIDEAST, through which he has establish net work of university professors who meet to rethink how academia can better address the education of special needs persons. A Focus of his work is to developing university curricula in special education where currently, there is no special education degree program in Palestine.

Sophia, una dolcissima bambina affetta dalla sindrome di Down, è una persona speciale a detta della mamma Rossana: «a special gift».
La testimonianza diretta dei membri della famiglia Orsenigo, generosi nel raccontare la loro storia di dolore e gioia, densa di domande sul futuro ma piena di speranza, apre il terzo volume della serie "Teacher's handboook for children with special needs" realizzata dal Ce.S.I. (Centro di Ateneo per la SolidarietĂ  Internazionale) e pensata per aiutare gli insegnanti e i professionisti che lavorano con bambini affetti da particolari patologie nei Paesi in via di sviluppo.
Parents, teachers and professionals working together for an inclusive policy tratta in particolare la gestione della relazione tra i genitori di bambini diversamente abili, gli insegnanti che si occupano della loro educazione e i professionisti che detengono la responsabilità della diagnosi e del percorso di riabilitazione. Il concetto centrale, sviluppato dagli autori Rita Sidoli e Sami Basha – attraverso esempi pratici e numerose illustrazioni–, è che la collaborazione equilibrata tra le tre parti sopra citate favorisce l'esito positivo di un lavoro utile e fondamentale per aiutare i bambini a realizzare il loro pieno potenziale.
